THIRTEEN

RUNNING MEN

BTS could now call themselves not just idols but international stars who draw crowds of thousands to their concerts all around the world. Some fans at home might have been worried that success would change them. After all, this was a group who wrote songs from their own experiences as young people and who had built a unique relationship with ARMY through openness and communication. Would that suffer as they became more and more popular and their fan base expanded exponentially?

Not with these guys. One of the first things they did when they got back to Seoul was take a group of fans to the movies. Have you ever known a group to do that before? What’s more, it was BTS keeping a promise they had made before they released ‘I Need U’. Back then they had sworn that if they won a music show they would treat some fans to a night out with them at the movies (it was V’s idea), and here they were, being true to their word.

The choice of movie was easy. After receiving good reviews for his solo mixtape and the ‘P.D.D’ collaboration with Warren G, RM was invited by Marvel to contribute to the soundtrack to their movie Fantastic Four. The result was ‘Fantastic’, which featured Mandy Ventrice, an American singer who had worked with Snoop Dogg, Jay-Z and Kanye West. So, along with 200 fans, who were probably more interested in the occupants of the front row than the superhero movie, on 12 August the boys attended a special screening at the CGV Cinema in Wangsimni, Seoul, to support (and poke a little fun at!) their leader.

The fun and games couldn’t last forever, though, and it wasn’t long before the hard-working Bangtans were again on the plane to Japan. Back in June, BTS had achieved their first number-one single in Japan with a track written only in Japanese called ‘For You’. The song has a soft, lyrical flow and a slow beat provided, somewhat unusually, by a plink-plonk piano and whistle. It’s catchy and light, and the music video is a gem – worth catching if only to see Jungkook in a giant teddy bear outfit!

BANGTAN BOMB

400-METER RELAY RACE @ ISAC

Having missed the Idol Star Athletics Championships in February 2015 because they were on tour in Japan, BTS eagerly return to the competition in August to defend their position as kings of the relay. With a team comprising Jimin, Jungkook, V and J-Hope, they had high expectations as they lined up against Seventeen, B1A4 and Teen Top. Have a look at this Bangtan bomb to see if they beat their K-pop rivals.
